This area is called "Samtong", designating the natural spring water that rises nonstop throughout the four seasons. Samtong is a Gust-Out water area, where water comes out to the surface when rain falls. This happens because while the water flows along the banks of the Hantan-river, it gets blocked by basalt rocks from going deeper underground and then the rocks make it flow back upwards between basalt rock layers or bed rock and basalt rock layers.
Jangheung-ri, Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon-gunCheorwon Lava Site is a volcanic topography formed by lava flowed down the valley of the fourth basalt in the Cenozoic Era. It is the only lava plateau that can be observed in the inland areas of South Korea. The formation of the basalt, which forms the Cheorwon lava site, is estimated to be between 540,000 and 120,000 years ago.
Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon-gunJiktang Waterfall is located on a flat basalt in the main stream of the Hantan River, unlike other waterfalls in Korea, it is widely spread along the stream's side. As water flowed over the basalt, formed with layers of lava, the basalt got chipped off along the columnar joint, due to the long-term weathering and eroding.
Jangheung-ri, Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon-gunGoseok is a 15-meter-high granite observed inside the Hantan River Gorge in Jangheung-ri, Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon-gun. Since there is a pavilion called Goseokjeong located nearby, the area around the Valley is also named as Goseokjeong. Along with the topography before the formation of the basalt lava plateau, this area has a high geological and topographical value, since it let people know the fact that the basal lava flowed over the bed rock, forming a lava plateau.
336 Jangheung-ri, Dongsong-eup, Cheorwon-gunSambuyeon Falls, located in the granite area on the middle of Mount Myeongseong (870 meters), is a three-stage waterfall measuring about 20 meters high. It has been formed by the water cutting(eroding) down the granite, after it was revealed on the surface, in the Cretaceous period.
216 Sambuyeon-ro, Galmal-eup, Cheorwon-gunHwajeogyeon refers to granite towering in a height of 13m in Hantan Riverside. It was named because granite rocks have been piled like rice sheaves from old times.
67, Sajeong-ri, Gwanin-myeon, Pocheon-siMt. Jijang tuff was formed during the Mesozoic Cretaceous period and consists entirely of lapilli tuff with particles of 4 ~ 64mm. Tuff is divided into drop tuff hardened after dropped from the air and ash-flow tuff and fresh breccia is distributed in the lower tuff.
885, Jung-ri, Gwanin-myeon, Pocheon-siMeonguri Gorge is a place where basalt gorge presents a grand sight enough to be called ‘Grand Gorge in Korea’. It is said to have been called as Meonguri because ‘do not go there drunk. If falling, you get a bruise.
783-17, Uncheon-ri, Yeongbuk-myeon, Pocheon-siAuraji means the estuary where two or more waterways gather together and pillow lava was named because basalt looks like a round pillow. Pocheon Auraji pillow lava is a geological attraction located at the mouth of the river where the Hantan River and Yeongpyeongcheon meet and is a rock hardened while hot lava was flowing and quickly cooled in cold water(Yeongpyeongcheon).
2668, Pocheon-ro, Changsu-myeon, Pocheon-siPocheon Art Valley located on the foot of Jusan was Korea’s representative granite quarry in the late 1960s. However, good quality granite(Pocheonseok) was not produced since the mid-1990s and it was left as a hideous waste quarry while the environment is destroyed and Pocheon created this place as Korea’s first eco friendly cultural and artistic space.
234, Art valley-ro, Sinbuk-myeon, Pocheon-siAs the most representative geological heritage in Yeoncheon, Jaein Falls boasts more beautiful and stunning landscape than any other regions around Hantan River. During Cenozoic quaternary, lava erupted from Ori Mountain and 680 Hill in Pyonggang County, Gangwon-do flew along the old Hantan River and flew backward along the valley flowing along Jijangbong past Gomunri and created Jaein Falls by eroding rocks while the valley is flowing over the hardened rock again.
Gomun-ri, Yeoncheon-eup, Yeoncheon-gunIn Cheorwon and Pocheon including Yeoncheon, unconsolidated sediments are distributed under the hardened basaltic layer and this sedimentary layer is called Baekuiri Layer. Baekuiri Layer is mostly conglomerate bed with many gravels and some sand layer and mud layer are also placed under basalt.
526-35, Hyeonmun-ro, Yeoncheon-eup, Yeoncheon-gunJwasangbawi Rock is located in Jangtan-ri, Cheongsan-myeon, Yeoncheon-gun and consisted of Jangtanri basalt belonging to Mesozoic Cretaceous intrusive rocks. In contrast to the Cenozoic Quaternary basalt forming the flat plain around it, the height from the surface of Hantan River to the peak reaches about 60m, boasting an overwhelming landscape.
307, Sindap-ri, Jeongok-eup, Yeoncheon-gunLike Chatancheon Columnar Joint, Eundaeri Planticular Joint corresponds to a place made by lava that flowed backward along Chatancheon and hardened. But, Eundaeri Region is a geological attraction with very high scientific and educational value because horizontal joints not easily observed in Hantan River and Imjin River are observed. As lava is cooled, columnar joint and horizontal joint are made depending on the environment at that time and the cause of horizontal joint observed in Eundaeri Region is not revealed clearly yet so it can be said to be very important academically.
728-1, Eundae-ri, Jeongok-eup, Yeoncheon-gunJeongokri ruins are located in Jeon-gok-ri, Jeongok-eup, Yeoncheon-gun, Hantan River and leading ruins of Korea’s early Paleolithic era. First discovered in 1978, these ruins were designated as the historical site No. 286 through the first archaeological excavation in 1979.
